Tony Marshall is 32 and works as a welder in Ipswich. ‘My brother in law told me about Kick Free, the stop smoking sessions they run at Portman Road. I have been smoking since I was about fifteen and I really wanted to give up because of my health. Not that I am ill, but I was getting fed up with feeling addicted to smoking. I wasn’t enjoying it any more. I would get half way down a cigarette and throw the rest away.
‘I began to think, what’s the point of buying cigarettes if I am throwing half the fags away - it’s just such a waste of money. This is about the fourth time I have tried to quit. All the previous times I went cold turkey and tried to quit on willpower alone. I have no idea why I started up again after the last attempt. I think I just fancied a fag.
‘The group here is really friendly - you can relax and you don’t get the impression anyone is wagging the finger at you. Nobody says you have to stop. It’s mostly blokes, so you can come down here and have a laugh. It has really given me the confidence to get through and stay quit.’
