Ann's story

Ann Hughes is 69 and lives in Felixstowe with her husband, Ted. She is living proof that it is never too late to give up smoking. A lifelong smoker of over fifty years, Ann gave up with the help of Tina Gipson who works for the Suffolk Stop Smoking Service at Haven Health in Felixstowe.

‘I had tried on and off over the years to give up smoking but with no success. My daughters used to bully me to give up but the more they nagged me the more I dug my heels in and refused. I don’t respond to nagging and I knew I would have to be ready to stop smoking and make that decision for myself’, she says.

When Ann had a heart attack last year she realised it was time to stop but found it a struggle. ‘The heart attack gave me a fright and I gave up straight away. But it was much harder than I thought and I still needed some support. Tina was fantastic. She suggested nicotine patches and an inhaler’, says Ann.

‘One of the worst things for me was I had nothing to do with my hands. I was used to fiddling with a cigarette and that’s a hard habit to break after fifty years. The inhaler was a stroke of genius. I am now completely quit and would never go back to smoking in a million years. My health is better but so is my pocket! Now I can look my daughters in the eye and say, ‘I’m a non-smoker so you can’t bully me any more!’
